Ubuntu 9.10, detto Karmic Koala è da oggi disponibile per il download.

Finalmente ho configurato la stampante canon iP 1500 PIXMA su Ubuntu.

Ecco come ho fatto:

The first step is to open up your source list and add this to it

deb http://mambo.kuhp.kyoto-u.ac.jp/~takushi/ubuntu ./

If you don’t know how to open up your source list you can do it by putting this in the terminal

gksudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list

you can use whatever text editor you like to edit your source list.

After adding that to your source list you need to do this in the terminal

sudo apt-get update

Next you need to install these files

sudo apt-get install libcnbj-2.5 bjfilter-2.5 pstocanonbj

Cupsys will be automatically restarted and you can select printer in cupsys configuration which is
http://localhost:631 or if you don’t want to do that you can go to System>Admistration>Printer>Add Printer.

To add the printer through the cups, the first thing you do is click on add a printer. The next screen will ask you for the name of you printer, location and description the ony thing you really have to fill in is the name. After you done filling in the information click continue. The next page is asks you to select your printer which should be Canon iP1500 USB # (Canon iP1500). Hit continue and then it will ask you for your driver, select the Canon Pixma iP1500 Ver.2.50 (en) then click on add printer.

To add the printer the other way once you click on add printer a new window will open up that say’s add a printer at the top and Step 1 of 3: Printer connection. As long as your printer is turned on it should show up in “Use a detected printer”, if it doesn’t you can select it in “Use another printer by speciying a port” and selecting Canon iP1500 USB # (Canon iP1500) then click forward. The next page is where you select the printer driver. The manufacturer is Canon if it already isn’t selected and the Driver is Pixma iP1500 Ver.2.50, then click forward. Finally the next screen is the printer information you don’t really have to worry about filling in the rest of the information if you don’t want to just click “Apply” and now your iP1500 printer should show up under printers.

Right click on your printer and then click on Print a Test Page and your printer should crank out a test page, if it doesn’t please let me know and we can try to figure out why.

Spesso capita di dover lavorare su una postazione windows e di sentire la mancanza di linux o di qualche suo programma specifico.
Magari è solo una sensazione da geek, più che una vera esigenza, ma spesso questa situazione provoca grossi stati di “ansia”. Di solito per supplire a questa mancanza si ricorre ad una bella virtualizzazione ed ai programmi multipiattaforma (mozilla,OOo…).
Oltre a tutto ciò ci sono anche altri modi che permettono ad un utente Linux di sentirsi a casa anche se sta lavorando su una postazione Windows.

Sudowin
Si tratta di un programma sviluppato per i sistemi Microsoft che inspirandosi al comando Linux SUDO simula la gestione dei permessi delle distribuzioni come Ubuntu.

Questo permette di eseguire programmi come amministratore da un account limitato senza dover abbandonare l’account in uso. In questo modo, l’utente resta sempre il proprietario dei file installati, delle chiavi di registro e così via che lo riguardano. A differenza di RunAs, inoltre, tutte le icone presenti sul desktop restano visibili nella loro posizione.

AndLinux
Permette di far funzionare una distribuzione Linux come Ubuntu 7.10 sotto Windows, sia in modalità shell di comandi che grafica attraverso Xming. E questo grazie al fatto che, basandosi sul progetto Cooperative Linux (coLinux), andLinux utilizza dei propri driver per emulare i dispositivi hardware ed eseguire il kernel di Linux in Supervisor Mode (Ring 0)

Nell’installazione viene chiesto quanta RAM volete dedicare ad andLinux.

Si può scegliere se usarlo come servizio o farlo partire manualmente da Prompt.
Bisogna decidere se andLinux accederà alle cartelle condivise di windows e se si come (per esempio usando Samba)

E’ ancora in Beta, ma sembra funzionare già bene.

KDE 4.0 su windows
Il nuovo DE ha un livello di astrazione tale che si potrà eseguire pure su windows.
Per adesso però siamo ancora indietro, aspettiamo novità.

Oggi ho dovuto aggiornare Mysql dalla versione 4 alla 5 e mysqlcheck mi diceva che le tabelle erano da aggiornare.

Ecco come risolvere il problema:

mysqlcheck --check-upgrade --all-databases --auto-repair
mysql_fix_privilege_tables

Oggi ho finalmente provato ManDVD, un semplice software per creare DVD con i propri filmati, le proprie foto e la colonna sonora che si vuole.

il software è molto intuitivo, e nonostante non sia perfetta la traduzione in italiano in poco tempo si riesce a capire la logica di funzionamento riuscendo a creare da piccole slideshow fino a dvd completi.

Molto semplice inserire effetti, transizioni e menu. Certamente non è alla pari di software più rinomati, ma per iniziare a capire il meccanismo di certi prodotti e produrre filmati per amici e parenti mi sembra un’applicazione molto adatta.

Mi sembra sia una applicazione ottima per le scuole e per tutte le situazioni in cui si vuole fare qualcosa di carino con i ragazzi ma non si hanno a disposizione molte risorse. Io infatti l’ho utilizzato per un progetto con un gruppo socio-educativo e penso che in futuro proverò a proporlo ad altre situazione.
